WHAT IS NYEPI?

Nyepi is Balinese’s day of silence that commemorates every Isakawarsa (Saka new year) according to Bali's calendar. It is also a national holiday in Indonesia and this year, it falls on March 5, 2011.

Observed from 6 am on Nyepi day until 6 am the next morning, it is a day reserved for self-reflection and as such, anything that might interfere with that purpose is restricted. The main restrictions are: no lighting fires (and lights must be kept low); no working; no entertainment or pleasure; no traveling; and for some, no talking or eating at all. The only people allowed to go outside are the Pecalang, traditional security men who patrol the streets to ensure the prohibitions are being followed.

Although Nyepi is a Hindu holiday, non-Hindu residents of Bali observe it as well. Even tourists are not exempt; although free to do as they wish inside their hotels, no one is allowed onto the beaches or streets, and the Ngurah Rai airport in Bali remains closed for the entire day. No flights can take off or land on the airport on this day. Exceptions are only granted for emergency vehicles carrying those with life-threatening conditions and women about to give birth.

For those who have never experienced Nyepi in Bali before, please take this chance to witness the various rituals performed everywhere in the island, on the days leading to it. And although guests cannot go anywhere outside the resort on Nyepi day, rest assured that there will be many exciting activities that they can join. Also, all facilities (including the restaurants and bars) at the resort will operate as usual that day.

Look forward to having you celebrating this year’s Nyepi with us.
